If you're searching for a hidden gem in Kyoto, look no further than Cafe Kitanishi. Nestled at 735 Shinkamanzacho in the charming Shimogyo Ward, this delightful café effortlessly blends the warmth of tradition with a hint of contemporary flair. As you step inside, the inviting ambiance greets you, emanating a sense of nostalgia that is uniquely Japanese, yet comforting, making it suitable for both quiet reflection or a cozy gathering with friends.

Cafe Kitanishi specializes in a unique coffee experience, expertly crafting Italian coffee that rivals the best cappuccinos found in Italy itself. Enthusiasts will appreciate the rich, dark notes of the roast complemented by a firm, velvety foam — a treat reported by Boris Stojsavljevic, who affirms that it's among the finest he has sampled across Asia. If coffee isn’t your only craving, indulge in their famed homemade apple pie, which has received accolades for its delectable flavor and flaky crust, elevating this café to a premier destination for both locals and tourists alike.

The café is proudly family-run, adding a personal touch to each visit. As Alan L. noted, the morning set is not only delicious but offers excellent value, showcasing Cafe Kitanishi's commitment to making quality food accessible. A true hiding spot, visitors like Rock YU appreciate the café’s serene setting just a short stroll from the bustling main street. The charming décor draws you in, allowing you to savor your meal in a peaceful atmosphere that feels like a warm embrace from a cherished memory.

This is not merely a café; it's a culinary haven where traditional Japanese tea house vibes meet a comforting Western café experience. Breakfast and lunch are lovingly prepared, and for those who may feel hesitant due to language barriers, fear not — an English menu is available for ease of selection. For those who appreciate the simplicity of a classic, devoid of WiFi and power charges, you can immerse yourself fully in great conversations or simply enjoy the moment with a slice of handmade cheesecake.

So whether you're a discerning coffee connoisseur, a pastry lover, or just someone seeking a serene moment away from the bustle of the city, Cafe Kitanishi is a must-visit. This enchanting oasis in Kyoto not only serves delicious food and drink, but it also promises a delightful experience adorned with history, love, and familial warmth. Stop by and let each sip and every bite transport you to a place of comfort and joy.

Very pleasant combination of old and new, with a very traditional vibe. Extremely well maintained :-) Italian coffee is made just like in Italy - among the best cappuccinos I had in Asia, with proper firm foam. The coffee is a dark roast though, maybe will not be to everybody's taste. Apple pie is second to none.

Cute little cafe run by an older couple. Had the morning set and it was tasty and good value.

I found another hidden gem in Kyoto. It’s a very classical coffee shop. Please enjoy hand-made chees cake and a wonderful cup of joe . Cash payment only. No Wi-Fi and no power charge.

Charming cafe with a traditional feel, located just off the main road in a short laneway. The owner is very nice and while English is limited she was very thoughtful and helpful, showing how to traditionally enjoy Matcha and guiding through the menu. The morning service set is a light and refreshing start to the day, and the matcha set is delightful. An excellent spot to start your day with good vibes and foods!

We chanced upon this place for a quick coffee and it was a pleasant surprise. Place was clean, coffee was strong and they have a smoking booth (which means the place can be kids-friendly too!)
